Connecting The Rainbow
One family at a time

Counting Down

Our flights are booked, bags getting backed, and a flurry of activity is underway!

On Monday, April 5th, I will board a plane in Minneapolis, and Shelley a plane in Alabama, so we can meet up in Washington, D.C. where we'll have a several hour layover. Our plan at the moment is to meet up with Andrea Roberts, Founder of Reece's Rainbow.

Next we'll board a flight to Frankfurt, Germany, where we will again have a s.e.v.e.r.a.l hour layover (read "overnight") before flying to Belgrade, Serbia. Looks like I'll have plenty of time to work on my research paper. LOL

Serbia? Yes, we've added Serbia to our itinerary. More details about this leg of the trip to come. ;-)

On Friday the 9th we'll move camp to Sofia, Bulgaria!

On Sunday the 11th I get the pleasure of photographing the reunion of Shelley and her new son Kullen! I'm sure there won't be any tears shed THAT day!

The remainder of the week will be spent getting the documents needed for Kullen to return to the states, and a little sight seeing.

But, the most important part of the entire trip is our meeting with the families of Bulgaria who have chosen to keep their children with DS! It looks like we'll be meeting on Saturday the 17th (which is really only Friday the 16th here in the states). Then we'll be hopping our flights back home!

It will be a whirlwind of a trip, but we are very excited for so many reasons!

Two Goals Met!

WHOO HOOO! We're so excited! Our goal has been met for two of the items off our wish list. How awesome is that?! Thank you so much for your donation!

Simple ways that YOU can help!

Many people have expressed their excitement over this project and asked for specifics on what they can donate. Here are the answers to some of the questions that I've received recently:

Can I donate used toys?
YES! We will happily accept used toys. So, clean out your kid's toy box and bed room and send us the toys that they no longer play with or have already mastered! We're specifically looking for educational toys and puzzles that meet the requirements on our donation page. If you're not sure if something will work, email us and we'll let you know.

Can I purchase something and send it directly to you?
YES! Our
amazon wish list is a great way to do this! The shipping address is already linked to the wish list and on most Amazon purchases, you can receive free shipping as long as you spend at least $25. This is the EASIEST way to help us collect supplies. ALL donations sent this way ARE tax deductible donations too!

Would you rather we donate money or supplies?
We will gladly take either! We would prefer that people order the supplies that we need and send those to us. But, we can easily take donated money and buy the supplies ourselves too. We will also gladly take Toys R US giftcards, Wal-Mart gift cards or cards from any other place where the supplies that we need can be purchased. We certainly don't mind doing the shopping for you!

Can my local group do something to help?
YES! We would love for local Down syndrome groups (or churches, Sunday School classes, girl scout troops, etc) to embrace this project and help us to provide for these families in Eastern Europe. As a group, your local organization can send a monetary donation or collect new and/or used toys and therapy supplies and send those to us.
Any organization that donates to this project will be recognized as a sponsor on our website!

What is the greatest need right now?
Everything. We need the items on the wish list, we need people to donate money to buy the supplies, we need people to spread the word and collect donations, we need organizations to partner with us and provide funds and/or supplies.
We have people willing to assemble to supplies to take and ship to Eastern Europe, we have families in Eastern Europe ready to use the supplies with their children.....now, we just need the stuff! We need your help!

We are so excited about this project, the opportunity to help so many children all over Eastern Europe and the chance to ease a small part of the burden that their family's face as they work to raise their children with Down syndrome. I hope that all of you will partner with us and provide one small piece as we work to Connect the Rainbow!

And we're off!

"Connecting the Rainbow" is officially up and running! Our first and most difficult task is to collect the items needed for the parent group in Bulgaria. (You can find them on our Wish List.)

Leah and Shelley will be traveling to Bulgaria at the end of March or beginning of April. We're just waiting to hear Shelley's travel date for her adoption!

During our time in Bulgaria, Shelley will be picking up her newest son Kullen, (and I get to play photographer! HOORAY!), doing whatever it is she needs to for her adoption, and meeting with the parent group. It's then that we'll get to distribute the parent packets, and show the parents how to use the various tools.

If anyone has any video of their kids using the items you see on our wish list (like the honey bear cups, or the Talk Tools Straws and horns, or special feeding spoons, etc.) please let us know! It would be great to show parents examples of kids using them.

We're so very excited for the opportunities that Connecting the Rainbow will bring to these parents who've taken the huge leap of faith, and KEPT their child with Down syndrome in their family. I'm sure it seems daunting to them, but with support they can do it, and their children will thrive!
